When I met him, I tested them both before buying, and both played fine using the output from a car stereo. No audible rubbing or anything. Voice coils measured around 6 ohms.
While I still need to look at them in daylight, I think the better one of the two just needs a little glue to repair a small area where the cloth surround may have separated from the cone. My thoughts are to use this driver to incorporate into some sort of center channel speaker, to use with my 820s. Anyone have thoughts on box size, etc? Some comments in the archives seem to indicate that the Santana cabinet was not optimal for these. My ideal cabinet would look something mid-century/Danish modernish, like the Capistrano, except a few inches lower so I can place my 52" screen on it.
In the other one, the cone seems intact, but the surround has problems. I don't know if the surround is savable, or not. Again, I still need to examine it more closely. I am hoping that worst comes to worst, GPA can replace the surround and reuse the existing cone.

I don't think those surrounds can be replaced. But a GOOD speaker tech may know a way. I've met some very skilled reconers that I would call craftsmen. Hardly anybody wants to work that hard anymore though.

The 'good' one pictured above on the left has a radial tear in the cone just to the inside of the surround. The tear goes about 1/4 of the way around. Could I use some glue, maybe with some sort of patch from behind, to hold it together? Otherwise it would need a new cone. Too bad, because otherwise the cone and surround look great.
The one on the right has a 1/2" or so chunk missing from the cloth surround. So I think there is no question the surround would have to be replaced. The paper cone itself is all intact, but there are some dents in the dust cover area that affect the cones cosmetics.
I was hoping that at least one of them could be used with its Biflex cone. But my hopes are now dwindling. In any event I will call GPA about them next week to see if they are either savable, or should just be converted to a woofer cone configuration.
